Mycotoxins in Maize: What You Need to Know This Season
Maize silage is an excellent forage for dairy cows – highly palatable and delivers energy whilst supporting rumen health. But, it can come with potential hidden challenges – moulds and fungi that produce mycotoxins.
According to the latest FEFAC report, maize was the most likely crop in the EU to carry medium to high levels of mycotoxins, including:
- DON – linked to gut inflammation, diarrhoea, and reduced milk yield
- ZON – associated with fertility problems and pregnancy loss
Plus aflatoxins, fumonisins, and T2/HT2
Even small amounts of mycotoxin contamination can cost – in lost milk, fertility issues, and wasted forage.
Using mycotoxin binders such as Ultrasorb R can help give your herd the tools they need should mycotoxins present any challenges.
